How the EQ-i® Works
The BarOn EQ-i® is the world's most widely used emotional intelligence (Ei) instrument and is based on over 20 years of research by Dr. Reuven Bar-On. He is a leading name in the field of Ei and inventor of the phrase "emotional quotient". Emotional intelligence is often described as a range of social and emotional competencies. These are regarded as reliable indicators of success in work, and in life generally. As well as an obvious popularity with management trainers, the EQ-i® is also widely used by coaches and counsellors.
The EQ-i® is designed to measure 13 constructs related to emotional intelligence. These are arranged in 5 composite scales:
- Intrapersonal
- Interpersonal
- Adaptability
- Stress management
- General mood.
Applications of the EQ-i®
The EQ-i® is most commonly used to develop leaders, professionals and employees in customer service related jobs. Low scores on the instrument often pinpoint the reasons for poor interpersonal or client relationships. In some cases these are more accurately described as areas of emotional "incompetence". These may be "derailers" for people in leadership or service positions.
Management trainers most commonly use the EQ-i® to work with teams which need to improve some specific interpersonal relationships. See the MDS programme Emotionally Intelligent Leaders . Taking the EQ-i®
The BarOn EQ-i® consists of 133 items. You go online to complete the questionnaire which takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
The EQ-i® produces a 12 page, personlised report detailing scores for each of the 5 composite scales and 13 subscales, together with a section on strategies for development.

EQ-i® Accreditation
MDS is a centre of excellence for the EQ-i® , and is authorised to arrange certification programmes for you. These are scheduled for delivery by CPPAP™ in Australia , and can be arranged on an "as-needed" basis by MDS in Hong Kong or Beijing .
